Beginner checklist: your first day fly fishing
Basics · 8 min read
A calm plan for your first outing: gear, knots, and a simple approach that builds confidence.
Start with one water type (a small river beat or a stillwater edge) and commit to learning it for a few sessions.
Keep your setup simple: 5–6 weight rod, floating line, 9ft leader, and a small box of proven patterns.
Begin with two knots you trust: one for leader-to-fly (Improved Clinch or Davy) and one for leader-to-tippet (Double Surgeon’s).
Define success as good drifts and quiet approaches — not just fish landed. The fish come as your presentation improves.
Fish slowly. Make fewer casts, but better casts: aim for drag-free drift and controlled line.
Keep it ethical: respect access rules, handle fish gently, and leave the water better than you found it.
