Minimal tackle list (don’t overbuy)
Gear · 6 min read
A small kit that covers most waters — so you learn faster and spend less.
Rod & reel: a 5-weight is the most versatile starting point for many trout and general freshwater situations.
Leaders & tippet: carry 4X–6X tippet, and a few 9ft leaders to match your line weight.
Flies: keep it small — a few nymphs, a few dries, and one or two streamers in proven sizes.
Tools: nippers, forceps, floatant, and a small indicator pack. Add a net if you’ll release fish often.
Upgrade after you identify a clear need (wind, bigger water, heavier flies) — not before.
Keep it ethical: respect access rules, handle fish gently, and leave the water better than you found it.
